The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, also known as the Anzacs, set out to conquer the Gallipoli peninsula on April 25, 1915, to provide the allied navies access to the Dardanelles. The goal was to seize Constantinople, the capital of the Ottoman Empire and a German ally (it is now Istanbul in Turkey).
When the Anzacs arrived at Gallipoli, the Ottoman-Turkish defences fought bravely. Their attempt to remove Turkey from the conflict rapidly reached a standstill, and the battle lasted for eight months.
The allied forces evacuated at the end of 1915. Both sides incurred significant losses and difficulties. More than 8,000 Australian servicemen lost their lives. Australians living in their own country were significantly affected by the news of the arrival at Gallipoli and the following events. April 25 quickly established itself as the day Australians honour the sacrifice of those who lost their lives during the war.
The Gallipoli campaign failed to achieve its military goals, but the bravery of the Anzacs has left a lasting legacy for all Australians and New Zealanders. There are two ways to observe Anzac Day and show your respect. Commemoration ceremonies are more formal and occur at war memorials, whereas commemorative services are at dawn. The Gold Coast's 2023 Anzac Day 2022 Dawn Services & Commemorations are listed below.
RSL Burleigh Heads Sub Branch
The RSL Burleigh Head Sub Branch is the host organisation for the 2023 ANZAC Day Dawn Service in Burleigh. The Dawn Service is rooted in history and protocol to honour all Australians and New Zealanders who have fought or given their lives in wars and conflicts since World War I. It is a sombre ceremony that includes wreath-laying, playing of the Last Post, and observing a minute of silence.
Be at the Cenotaph Memorial Park before 4:15 am for the dawn service. Then be at Memorial Park Burleigh Heads for the main ANZAC Day ceremony from 9:15 am to 11 am.
Currumbin RSL
Activities on ANZAC Day 2023 at Currumbin RSL will begin with the lighting of Throwers Bridge and Elephant Rock. The Throwers Bridge in Currumbin and Elephant Rock at Currumbin Beach will light up from April 17 to 25, following the positive response from the neighbourhood in prior years.
The Walk4Remembrance returns on April 23. The 8-kilometre walk will start at Currumbin RSL Reserve beside the stream, with Tugun Surf Life Saving Club as the halfway point. Each dollar raised will be given to the Veteran Support Center.
On April 25, the Currumbin RSL Dawn Service returns at Elephant Rock on Currumbin Beach. The dawn service is at 5 am after the march, which starts at 4:35 am. They anticipate a sizable turnout from the neighbourhood this year. So arrive early. Park & Ride are available from Currumbin RSL & The Pines Shopping Centre.
