Since 2004, The Kokoda Youth Foundation has inspired Australians from all over the country to get outdoors and push their endurance to the limit. The Kokoda Youth Foundation hosts its annual Kokoda Challenge in Brisbane, Melbourne and the Gold Coast, with the Gold Coast being arguably the most popular due to its breathtaking hinterland scenery.
Inspired by the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea - a 96 km trail that formed the location of the 1942 battle between Japanese and Australian Allied Forces in World War II - the Kokoda Challenge is historically rooted in deeply held beliefs that encourage endurance, courage, sacrifice and mateship.
This 2019, the Gold Coast Kokoda Challenge is once again inviting adventurous trekkers and bushwalkers to take part in its gruelling 96 km cross-country course, which presents the ultimate outdoor challenge boasting fire trails, 12 creeks and climbing summits of 5,000 metres in vertical elevation. The hike - which starts at Firth Park in Mudgeeraba - takes place over two days with a completion time of 39 hours, and encourages participants to complete the course in groups of four to signify the Kokoda Spirit.
Gold Coast events for the 2019 Kokoda Challenge include the 96km Open, Stan Bisset 96km School Cup, 43km Open and the Jim Stillman 48km School Cup. Set yourself the ultimate goal and traverse across the Gold Coast’s spectacular hinterland with this year’s ultimate outdoor trek, which will also double as a premier fundraiser for Australian Youth.
